If we want to prevent a future war, Ukraine must win the current war, Minister of Defense Artis Pabriks (Attīstībai/Par!) pointed out in the Saeima on Thursday during a debate on increasing Latvia’s defense budget.
The politician explained that Russia’s attack on Ukraine took place without any reason, but to justify its imperial ambitions. This war is changing the security situation in Europe and around the world, but Russia has overestimated this attack in the hope of breaking Western unity.
The situation is the exact opposite, as many countries have consolidated due to the war, Pabriks said. At the same time, both true supporters of Ukraine and slightly weaker supporters have emerged.
Russia’s invasion has also led to a change in public perception in Finland and Sweden, which will probably apply for NATO membership in the near future. This will change the situation in the Baltic Sea region and will open opportunities for Latvia to deepen cooperation with both countries.
Pabriks pointed out that Western society must do everything possible for Ukraine to win the war, because Ukraine is also fighting for their freedom. “If we want to prevent a future war, then Ukraine must win this war,” said the minister, who is convinced of Ukraine’s victory.
Speaking about the possible beliefs of some European capitals that by reaching a ceasefire in Ukraine, the issue will be resolved, Pabriks pointed out that there is a possibility that Russia will make an offer to halt its attacks after some success is sold to its society. In such a situation, there may be Western countries that will be satisfied with the silence of weapons, however, setting a precondition for the non-withdrawal of Russian troops before the situation on February 24 will be a trap.
